Power Integrations package InnoSwitch3-TN to reduce energy waste

The ICs also incorporate a 725V primary MOSFET, isolated feedback, synchronous rectification and secondary side control. They are intended to enable power supplies for appliance and industrial auxiliary applications up to 21W.

The ICs support the high output current needed in smart-connected appliances at efficiencies of up to 90%, explains Silvestro Fimiani, senior product marketing manager at Power Integrations, compared to traditional approaches such as buck regulators that are often less than 60% efficient. “InnoSwitch3-TN ICs incorporate all feedback components while supporting isolated, non-isolated, single and multi-output designs for the most compact, flexible auxiliary power supply solution,” he adds.

The InnoSwitch3-TN flyback controller delivers constant efficiency across the load range and less than 5mW no-load consumption using FluxLink communication technology to achieve positive and negative outputs.

The ICs can be used in a 5.0V single output power supply, with two positive output rails, or with both positive and negative rails, without any external feedback components. FluxLink technology ensures synchronous rectification and accurate constant voltage and constant current on the output, says the company. The low forward drop of the SR MOSFET optimises cross-regulation performance.

Safety features include output over-current and over-temperature protection. The small MinSOP package can be used with a small number of external components for a full power supply design.

The RDK-710 reference design is available to evaluate the ICs which are available in volume production quantities directly from the company, or one of its distributors, Digi-Key, Farnell, Mouser or RS Components.
