RTC module has worlds best accuracy, says Micro Crystal
The compact real-time clock (RTC)  module has a custom IC and integrated quartz crystal resonator and is claimed to set new standards in terms of size – it is half the footprint of a uSOP-8 package, with no additional external components required. It is also claimed to offer the best accuracy levels of ±0.26 s/day at -40° to 85°C operating temperature. Current consumption is just 160nA in timekeeping mode.

The RV-3032-C7 can be used for applications requiring always-on timekeeping functions, with compliance to stringent clock accuracy over time, wide temperature range, and long battery life. Typical applications are smart meters, industrial and consumer applications, such as wearables and IoT devices.

The module’s power management features include wide supply voltage range (1.2 to 5.5V), an automatic back up switch, versatile charge pump and programmable trickle charger. The module can be coupled with a small sized, low capacity, rechargeable battery, or a low cost coin cell power unit to reduce the overall dimensions and the manufacturing cost of the end product, advises the company, while optimising the life of the battery.

The RV-3032-C7 RTC module includes the company’s digital temperature controlled quartz oscillator (DTCXO) and includes additional functions such as data protection through password, and MHz output frequency. The module is believed to be the first available to offer these functions in this small form factor.

The module is hermetically sealed in a compact reflow solderable DFN ceramic package and measures 3.2 x 1.5 x 0.8mm. It is RoHS/Lead-Free-compliant and AEC-Q200-qualified.

Roland Haeni, head of Application Engineering at Micro Crystal, commented that the module will “help engineers in developing next generations of smart products. The availability of a programmable high frequency clock output to drive the central MCU, and access to the high-resolution thermometer, used for accurate thermal compensation and allows setting temperature threshold alarms with interrupt function, will support numerous unique and new applications”.

It is sampling now with high volume production quantities available Q1 2021.
