Smart power stage devices integrate three DC levels
The AOZ527xQI series provides high efficiency, multi-phase controller for high performance GPUs, servers, 5G and AI applications. They use the company’s flexible smart driver IC and Gen Alpha MOSFET technology for multi-phase voltage regulators powering high-performance GPU and CPU in desktop add-in graphics cards (AICs), gaming laptops, servers, data storage AI and networking equipment.

The smart power stages are in an industry-standard 5.0 x 6.0mm QFN package and comprises three DC current levels for multi-phase voltage regulator optimisation.

A smart power stage device provides current monitoring (IMON) and temperature monitoring (TMON) information. IMON is used to replace traditional DCR sensing schemes with improved accuracy and eliminates the external components needed for DCR sensing and tuning, says Alpha and Omega Semiconductor. The TMON pin doubles as a fault pin, reporting the power stage temperature by outputting an analogue voltage of 8mV/°C. The TMON pin is an open-drain output that pulls high in the event of a fault.

The flexible and configurable driver IC makes the smart power stage compatible with many multi-phase controllers in the market, according to the company. It includes over-current protection (OCP), over-temperature protection (OTP), high-side FET source detect (HSD), and pre-over-voltage protection. The device has dynamic control of OCP threshold settings and zero-cross detect (ZCD) light load operation.

The series offers performance and robust operation to support high peak currents common in servers, high-performance GPU and AI applications. All devices in the family have high peak current capability, up to 150A for 10µs and 100A for 10ms.

The family supports both server, AI and GPU add-in card (12V input) as well as gaming laptop (20V input) input voltage operating range. For example, the AOZ5279QI can be used for gaming laptop applications powered by a 20V adaptor, while the AOZ5277QI, AOZ5273QI, and AOZ5276QI offer options in multi-phase regulators used in add-in cards, servers, 5G and AI. There are three performance levels (60, 70 and 90A) allow trade offs in the current/phase and number of phases.

The have a DC operating range of 3.0 to 20V (3.0 to 25V for the AOZ5279QI). The  full waveform current monitor has better than 5% accuracy while the temperature monitor has open-drain fault reporting.

The AOZ527xQI series is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks.
