Small smart motor modules reduces PCB space requirements

The integrated smart motor module (SMM) is designed to reduce PCB layout requirements. It has an adjustable gate drive current control which provides low EMI and high efficiency for one- or three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive designs.

The half bridge power stage is available in a compact, thermally enhanced 3.0 x 3.0mm QFN-18L package. It is suitable for use in a number of BLDC fan applications ranging from PC and server fans to seat cooling and home appliances.

The AOZ9530QV features short circuit protection, over temperature protection, Vcc under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and bootstrap UVLO. Input voltage is up to 28V and the SMM supports high current up to 7A. Operating ambient temperature range is -40 to 125 degrees C with 100% PWM (pulse width modulation) duty operation support. The SMM also provides adjustable gate drive sink and source current control that gives designers the ability to minimise EMI while maximising power efficiency, says the company.

The SMM can be used as an optimal power stage for BLDC motor drives. A single device would be used for single phase applications, two would be used for a H-bridge motor drive, and three for three-phase designs.

“In several cooling fan applications, the PCB for drive circuitry is enclosed within the fan assembly. The AOZ9530QV enables shrinking of the PCB enabling a system designer to increase the size of the fan blades, thus pushing more air within a given form factor,” said Armin Hsu, power IC senior marketing manager at AOS.

The SMM is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 24 weeks. All of the company’s products are offered in packages with Pb-free plating and compliant to RoHS standards.
