The AOZ7200 and AOZ7270 in the AlphaZBL (zero bridge loss) family virtually eliminate the bridge rectifier losses in AC/DC power supplies and adapters, claims the company. They can be used in high power (100W and above) adapters used for laptops and televisions, as well as power supplies for desktop PCs, game consoles, servers and telecomms.
The first two members of the family are a controller, the AOZ7200, in a SOT-23 package and the AOZ7270, which integrates a 600V, 190mΩ MOSFET in a DFN 5.0 x 7.0mm package.
Designers can use the AOZ7200 to balance performance and cost by pairing it with the company’s family of super junction MOSFETs. The AOZ7270 uses MOSFET technology and innovative packaging to reduce component count and design time. Both products are self-powered from the AC line and do not require external circuitry.
The proprietary self-biasing scheme uses minimal power from the AC line so it is efficient in light load or standby mode of operation. In a typical 100W application, the AOZ7270DI delivers efficiency improvements of 0.89% at 115V AC and 0.44% at 230V AC over a diode bridge. Both the AOZ7200 and AOZ7270 exceed lightning surge requirements that are critical in AC/DC applications, particularly in data centre applications.
“Today’s data centres strive for improved efficiency and thermals as cooling of the data centre takes as much if not more power than the servers themselves,” explains Colin Huang, power IC marketing manager at Alpha and Omega Semiconductor. In addition, high power adapters face thermal challenges as power density increases, continues Huang. Active bridge rectification enabled by AOZ7200 and AOZ7270 offer the simplest path to reducing power losses,” he adds.
The AlphaZBL devices make the design of Titanium-grade efficiency power supplies easier with active bridge rectification to reduce power losses. The self-powered Vcc in an AC systems has low quiescent current and a low reverse threshold (1mV) to improve efficiency.
The AOZ72xx series is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks.
