Laser driver expands GaN IC family for lidar systems
Intended for time of flight (ToF) lidar applications, such as robotics, drones, 3D sensing, gaming and self-driving vehicles, the EPC21603 laser driver integrates a 40V, 10 FET with a gate driver and low voltage differential signalling (LVDS) logic level input in a single chip. LVDS logic control allows the eToF laser driver IC to be controlled from an FPGA for applications where noise immunity is critical, e.g. augmented reality.


The driver is capable of very high frequencies exceeding 100MHz and super short pulses (less than 2ns) to modulate laser driving currents up to 10A. Bus voltage rating is 30V.  

The single-chip driver and eGaN FET based on EPC’s proprietary GaN IC technology is supplied in a chip-scale ball grid array which measures 1.5 x 1.0mm.

The level of integration makes design and layout easier and also facilitates assembly and saves space on the PCB. Integration also increases efficiency and reduces cost, says the company. EPC expects the portfolio to enable faster adoption of ToF solutions across varied end-user applications.

The EPC21603, together with the EPC21601 which was released earlier, are the initial products in EPC’s family of GaN ICs. “This new family of GaN integrated circuits will continue to expand to higher currents, higher voltages, as well as furthering integration of additional control and logic features on a single chip,” said Alex Lidow, CEO and co-founder of EPC.

The company also offers the EPC9156 development board which features the EPC21603 eToF laser driver IC. It is primarily intended to drive laser diodes with short, high current pulses.

The EPC21603 and EPC9156 are available for immediate delivery from Digi-Key.
