EMI X2 film capacitor saves space in automotive environments

The miniature film capacitor is claimed to have the highest IEC robustness classification and is suitable for automotive, industrial, consumer, and energy applications that require a high-capacitance X2 class device for EMI suppression.

Capacitance ranges from 0.1 to 22µF and lead spacing from 15 to 37.5mmm. Other features are 85/85 THB Class IIIB classification and long-life stability in harsh environmental conditions. According to the company, its volume is, on average, 60% smaller than competing X2 class capacitors, to reduce required PCB area,  as well as weight and cost.

Rated at 310V AC at 50 or 60Hz, the R53 series is intended for use in Class X2 line-to-line applications or in series with the AC mains. R53 is suitable for AC/DC converters in onboard chargers for xEVs, smart grid hardware, EMI filtering in variable frequency drivers (VFDs), LED drivers and high energy density applications such as capacitive power supplies.

The metallised polypropylene film is encapsulated in a self-extinguishing resin and a shell that meets UL 94 V-0 requirements. The polypropylene film combined with an internal parallel construction provides self-healing properties to prevent catastrophic failure and extend service life, advises the company.

In addition to AEC-Q200 qualification, the capacitors meet reliability standard for smart grid hardware which is often located in areas with limited access.

The R53 series is available immediately via Kemet distributors.
