AC/DC converter integrates PMBus for communication
The Artesyn AIF42 AC/DC converter has integrated inrush limiting and PMBus communication and delivers 93% efficiency which is claimed to be best in class.

Designed for use in the industrial, robotics and 5G telecomms markets, the AIF42BAC-01N converter reduces system size and enhances reliability by minimising the need for external components, says the company. The universal input range is 90 to 264V AC and nominal isolated output is 12V with load rating from 0 to 42A.

Power supply operation can be optimised to the specific needs of the target application using PMBus control and monitoring. This can also be used to access information on power supply and system health during operation in the field.

The full brick module is rated for 500W of continuous power and includes a proprietary internal inrush current limiting function. This saves space and reduces overall system cost, says the company. It also eliminates the need for external components to provide inrush current protection, saving on bill of materials cost. There is also a 10V auxiliary output which enables low power housekeeping circuitry to be supplied directly from the module rather than a second AC/DC power converter.

The module “is designed for applications that require high performance and reliable operation in harsh environments,” said Joe Voyles, vice president marketing, industrial power conversion products at Advanced Energy. The converter’s high operating efficiency across a wide load range lowers energy consumption and minimises heat dissipation. The module’s design is optimised for IP sealed applications in high pollution environments or externally mounted systems, which require solutions that are thermally bonded and contact-cooled to a cold wall or heatsink. According to Advanced Energy, this results in 100% available output power at baseplate temperatures as high as 100ºC.

An external hold-up function can be implemented through the addition of recommended capacitors to the module’s HVDC port. Active current share and start-sync functionality simplify the module’s implementation which require two units to operate in parallel.
