The three-terminal R-78 series switching regulators are typically used as replacements for linear types to improve efficiency and eliminate the need for heatsinks to save both cost and board space. Recom has introduced the cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series, operating up to 40V input and over a wider ambient temperature range. Output current rating is 0.5A and fixed output voltages are 3.3V, 5.0V, 12V and 15V.
Efficiency peaks at 96%, allowing operation to 100°C ambient with no or minimal derating at the minimum input voltage, depending on variant, advises Recom. At higher input voltages, the full 0.5A output can be drawn up to a minimum of 65°C ambient, depending on the variant.
Full input under-voltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection is provided, and the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1 3rd edition.
Other enhancements include lower quiescent current, a lower allowable I/O differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5.0V output parts and a smaller package size which maintains the standard pinout.
Parts include a three-year warranty. Samples are available from all authorised distributors or directly from Recom.
