Boost switching regulator with low ripple mode & low quiescent current
Nisshinbo Micro Devices has announced the launch of the NC4650, an innovative boost switching regulator specifically designed for IoT edge devices, wearable technology, and compact battery-powered systems.

The company says featuring an exceptionally low quiescent current of just 70 nA, delivering unprecedented efficiency and battery longevity and significantly reducing the operating cost and environmental impact of battery-operated products.

Nisshinbo says in particular, the device excels in intermittent operation scenarios, whereby the application frequently enters sleep mode for long periods of time. Its “Low Ripple Mode” significantly reduces output ripple noise and enhances dynamic response under low-load conditions, while seamlessly switching between this mode and its standard, highly efficient operating mode as needed. The NC4650 accommodates a wide input voltage range from 0.6 V to 5.5 V, with a startup capability as low as 0.8 V, making it highly versatile across various application contexts. The regulator is available with fixed output voltages internally configured between 1.8 V and 5.0 V, supporting numerous system designs and requirements.

In practical scenarios, such as IoT edge devices and wearable technology, the NC4650 achieves a typical efficiency of 85%, even under very low current load conditions. Furthermore, this regulator integrates essential protective features such as thermal shutdown functionality, as well as current limit capabilities, ensuring safe and reliable operation under varying environmental and operational stresses. The regulator's versatile design supports multiple functional configurations, including seamless pass-through mode, automatic output discharge, and complete VIN-VOUT disconnect options, catering to diverse system-level requirements.

The NC4650 is delivered in an ultra-compact WLCSP-6-ZA1 package, ideal for space-constrained, miniaturised electronic applications, including IoT sensors, edge-computing devices, battery-operated alarms and security sensors, wearable healthcare technology, and smartwatches. For rapid prototyping and development, evaluation boards featuring the device are available, ensuring seamless integration into projects.
