MEMS resonator is claimed to be worlds smallest

Claimed to be the smallest 32.768kHz MEMS resonator available, the resonator is based on miniature MEMS technology and exhibit stable frequency characteristics with a temperature drift of less than 160ppm across their operating range of -30 to 85°C. Initial frequency accuracy is ±20ppm which is at the level expected of a more sophisticated crystal resonator, says the company.

Many modern devices rely on accurate timing, driving the increase in need for low power consumption resonators, which are required to operate continuously to provide timing signals.

The integral 6.9pf capacitor reduces the components necessary for the circuit that generates the reference clock signal, to reduce the space required. The MEMS resonator measures 0.9 x 0.6 x 0.3mm, making it over 50 % smaller than a conventional 32.768 kHz crystal resonator, claims the company.

It is available in silicon-based wafer-level chip scale packaging (WL-CSP) and can be fully integrated into an IC made of a homogeneous semiconductor material.

The resonator generates stable reference clock signals by reducing the IC gain based on a low ESR value of 75kΩ. The company’s own tests indicate power consumption can be reduced by 13% when compared to conventional 32,768kHz resonators.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in December 2018.

Visitors to electronica 2018 in Munich (13 to 16 November) can see the resonators on the company’s stand in Hall C4 – 141.
