LDO regulator from Texas Instruments can double battery life

Quiescent current (IQ) is less than 25nA and has low IQ control at light loads even in dropout conditions, says the company. It is also claimed to provide best-in-class transient response for faster wake-up, improving application response times and dynamic performance. The footprint allows engineers to design smaller, lighter, more efficient products quickly by reducing power-supply size. The common industry packages allow for pin-to-pin drop-in replacement in existing designs, adds the company.

The low IQ control at light loads allows engineers to at least double the battery life for applications using a standard battery chemistry, such as lithium-ion. The low shutdown IQ of 3nA can extend battery shelf life by as much as five times in portable medical and wearable applications, explains the company.

The regulator can settle in less than 5µs for 1.0 to 50mA load transients, this is half the time of competing devices, says the company. Able to quickly respond to rapidly changing loads while providing minimal variation in output voltage, the regulator can benefit high-precision, low-power applications such as wireless IoT and portable medical devices, which require clean power to accurately acquire signals from around the body.

The device automatically transitions from an IQ-saving, low-load state to a high-load, fast-transient state without any external circuitry or components. This allows the solution size to be reduced by 70%, adding more functionality or lowering system cost by using smaller boards.

Pre-production samples are available now in a four-pin small outline no-lead package (S2SON) 1.0 x 1.0mm. A five-pin small outline transistor (SOT-23) package measuring 2.9 x 1.6 mm will be available later this year and a four-pin die-size ball grid array (DSBGA) package (0.65 x 0.65mm) will be available in early 2020.
