Two high switching frequency, synchronous buck regulators by Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) offer a low on-resistance power stage. The AOZ6762DI and AOZ6763DI in the AOZ676xDI series are packaged in a 3.0 x 3.0mm DFN eight-lead package with an exposed thermal pad. This allows cooler power conversion for consumer and networking equipment such as wireless AP/routers, set-top boxes, cable modems, audio equipment, and LCD TVs, advises the company.
The AOZ6762DI and AOZ6763DI are capable of delivering 2A and 3A, respectively, and up to 15W output power.
The power stage comprised of two power MOSFETs is optimised for efficient synchronous switching to minimise both switching and conduction losses. The regulators can achieve up to 90% efficiency at full load operation. When operating in low output current conditions, the devices run in a proprietary pulse energy mode (PEM) for efficiency through reduced switching loss. In this mode, the regulators can still maintain up to 86% efficiency at 10mA load operation to achieve the low standby power required to meet the One Watt Initiative.
The buck regulators enable the use of smaller external components, such as inductors and capacitors, to reduce PCB footprint and component costs and also improve transient response while maintaining fixed frequency switching. They are also claimed to reduce the side-band interference in wireless applications.
High switching frequency combined with low minimum controllable on-time enables low output voltages from a 12V bus making the regulators suitable for SoCs, FPGAs, and ASICs using deep sub-micron processes, advises the company. External compensation makes it easy for the user to trade off transient response and output ripple requirements with various output filters.
The AOZ6762DI and the AOZ6763DI are immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks.
