LIN-based motor driver IC manages EV thermal systems
The motor driver targets thermal valves, for accurate battery temperature control, and expansion valves, in the heat pump refrigeration loop. This enables a longer range for EVs, says the company.

The LIN-based, 1A-rated motor driver is for deployment in the mechatronic thermal management systems. The single chip drives small DC, BLDC or stepper motors. Each IC has an embedded microcontroller (with a 16-bit application processor and a separate communications processor), four FET half-bridge drivers, data conversion circuitry, plus LIN or serial interfaces. The 64Kbyte on-chip memory is double the 32kbyte capacity of Melexis’ MLX81332 and provides ample capacity for software, for example to incorporate safety diagnostics, essential calibration data and the ability to support over the air (OTA) updates. 

Over-temperature, over-current, over-voltage and under-voltage protection functions are all included.

The driver is based on Melexis’ high voltage silicon-on-isolator (SOI) technology. The company says it combines industry-leading operational robustness with elevated levels of functional integration. Its small form factor attains high power operation in minimal board space, adds the company. As a result, it can be implemented in even the most space-constrained of mechatronic deployments.

The MLX81334 drivers are supplied in 5.0 x 5.0mm 32-pin QFN package. They are suitable for use in 12V and 24V automotive systems.
