Transient voltage suppressors protect Type-C with PD connectors
ESD protection for Type-C connectors in mobile devices, laptops, TVs and other electronics devices is provided with the AOZ8S303BLS-24 and AOZ8S305BLS-24, a series of single-channel transient voltage suppressor (TVS) for high-speed line protection.

USB Type-C with PD (Power Delivery) has become a standard power and data interface of notebook PCs and smartphones. Voltage range is defined as variable from 5V to 20V.  For fast charging such as USB Power Delivery and Quick Charger, traditional TVS diodes for USB protection with breakdown voltage lower than 20V risk getting shorted or damaged and the corresponding Type-C port will inactivate permanently.

The AOZ8S303BLS-24 and AOZ8S305BLS-24 have a high reverse working voltage which covers the whole voltage range from a USB-PD port, explains Alpha and Omega Semiconductor. The low clamping voltage and minimised capacitance effect protect high speed lines such as USB, Thunderbolt, HDMI, and PCI Express.

The two TVS are housed in a standard WLCSP0.6x0.3-2 (0201) package. The small form factor is suitable for high-speed differential signals in Type-C. In addition to contributing to reducing the ESD failure rate, they also reduce the failure of short-to-Vbus in partner and customers’ electronic products, says the company.

The AOZ8S303BLS-24 and AOZ8S305BLS-24 are immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 20 weeks.
