Thick film resistor is AEC-Q200-qualified
The 150W resistor is available from Vishay Intertechnology in a clip-mount TO247 package, for direct mounting on a heat sink. It is qualified to AEC-Q200 and offers high power dissipation of 150W at 45°C case temperature, making it suitable for automotive applications. They also have improved pulse handling capability, claims the company.

The resistor provides up to 70% higher power dissipation than competing devices in the TO247 package. This reduces the need for components needed to cool the resistor, saving board space, simplifying layout, and reducing costs. There is a 30% improvement in energy handling compared with similar TO247 devices, reports the company, which allows designers to use fewer resistors.

Operation is up to 175°C and resistance values range from 0.03Ω to 1.3MΩ, to serve as the precharge or discharge resistor for inverters, converters, and on-board chargers for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plugged hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). It can also be used in general industrial and military power conversion applications.

The RoHS-compliant device offers a non-inductive design, tolerances down to ±1%, and extensive temperature cycling from 1,000 cycles.

Samples and production quantities of the new resistor are available now, with lead times of eight to 12 weeks.
