A new angle on ceramic capacitors for power supply filtering

The SV series of capacitor assemblies of vertically stacked ceramic capacitors are claimed to offer superior performance compared with aluminium or tantalum electrolytic capacitors.

Assemblies can be up to 10 chips of the same size with various lead configurations to safeguard against thermal and mechanical stresses and reduce the overall circuit board footprint, says the company. The capacitors are 100 per cent tested for dielectric withstanding voltage, insulation resistance, capacitance and dissipation.

The devices can be used for the input and output stages of switch mode power supplies and DC/DC converters. The SV series capacitor assemblies are available in the X7R dielectric, characterised by low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and low equivalent series inductance (ESL). The assemblies can handle high ripple currents at high frequencies to prevent self-heating (I2R) losses and degradation in the capacitor.

The capacitor assemblies are designed with the company’s patented Cap-Rack technology. A high temperature epoxy bonds same-sized chips to create a high capacitance in a small footprint.
